Common Eye Conditions Ages 40-60
Common Eye Conditions that may be noted in 40-60 year olds could be divided into 2 main categories: Refractive and Ocular Health.
Refractive Include conditions that are related to your glasses presciption and include: Myopia(nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), Astigmatism, Presbyopia and Refractive Surgery. The most notable of these is Presbyopia, which will affect the focusing ability and is the reason why people need bifocals or reading glasses starting in their early 40’s.
Common ocular health conditions that we will monitor for signs of in this age group include Vitreous Detachments, DIabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration.
On average eye exams every 2 years are indicated if no risk factors for eye disease are present. However if there are risk factors for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration we may recommend more frequent visits.
