What Causes Dry Eye Disease?

The root of Dry Eye Disease are 4 things, commonly remembered by using the acronym L.I.O.N.

Lids:  Blepharitis and Demodex are chronic infestations of the lids and lashes by organisms that create waste products that lead to inflmmation of the meibomian glands and disruption of the tear film.

Inflammation:  Meibomian glands are the long narrow glands in our lids that produce the oily part of the tear that prevents tears from evaporating.   Inflammation of the meibomian gland will cause this gland to produce less oils and result in dry eye.

Obstrucation:  Obstructed Meibomian glands prevent oils from flowing freely from the gland.

Nutrition: Diets rich in saturated fats adn processed foods can cause cellular inflammation in our meibomian glands causing dry eye disease.

Treat theses 4 and you can be free of your dry eye symptoms.
