Request AppointmentHow Often Should You Have Eye Exams?
The frequency of your eye exams depends on your age, overall health, and risk factors for eye diseases. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends:
- Birth–24 Months: First eye exam between 6–9 months
- Children (2–18): Annual comprehensive eye exams
- Adults (19–64): Comprehensive eye exams once every 2 years
- Adults with risk factors like diabetes: Comprehensive eye exams yearly
- Adults (65+): Comprehensive eye exams yearly
What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Our eye exams go beyond simply measuring your reading prescription. They’re a full assessment of your eye health, customized to address the specific needs of adults and seniors.
We take the time to understand your medical history, including any existing conditions and medications you’re taking, as these can sometimes affect your vision. This comprehensive approach allows us to create a personalized care plan that addresses your unique situation.
Detailed Medical History Reviews
We’ll discuss your overall health, family history of eye conditions, and any medications you’re taking. This helps us create a complete picture of your vision and potential risk factors.
Visual Acuity Testing
We’ll measure your near and distant vision to determine if you need an updated eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription. We’ll also provide education on the modern technology and features available in prescription lenses. Clear vision and an accurate prescription are essential for daily activities.
Retinal Imaging & Monitoring
The retina, located at the back of the eye, detects light properties to create visual information. Monitoring changes aids in early detection of eye diseases or potential vision loss.
- Optomap Retinal Imaging: Provides a detailed picture of the back of your eye, aiding in detecting eye diseases like macular degeneration. Its innovative technology helps us see potential problems early on when treatment can be the most effective.
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Captures detailed, layered retina images for monitoring and treating retina health and conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma.
Detailed Ocular Health Assessments
Our exams may include additional tests depending on your needs, such as:
- Tonometry: A tool for measuring intraocular pressure, a risk factor for glaucoma. Early detection and treatment of glaucoma are crucial for preserving vision.
- Visual Field Testing: A simple procedure that measures your complete field of view, including peripheral (side vision). It can help identify early signs of eye diseases like glaucoma, which can cause gradual vision loss if left untreated.
- Additional Assessments: We assess the eye’s surface and front structures (cornea, lens, pupil) using a slit lamp and additional tools.
Dry Eye Analysis
We complete a comprehensive dry eye analysis to screen for symptoms and help identify any potential concerns, such as poor tear quality.
Dry eye is a common condition that impact your eye comfort and vision, increasing the risk of eye infections or cornea scarring. Our goal is to help prevent serious complications and alleviate discomfort.
Optomap & Additional Testing
Our exams may include additional tests depending on your needs, such as:
- Optomap Retinal Imaging: Provides a detailed picture of the back of your eye, aiding in detecting eye diseases like macular degeneration. Its innovative technology helps us see potential problems early on when treatment can be the most effective.
- Tonometry: A tool for measuring intraocular pressure, a risk factor for glaucoma. Early detection and treatment of glaucoma are crucial for preserving vision.
- Ocular Health Assessment: An assessment tool that evaluates the health of the cornea, lens, retina, and other eye structures. A healthy eye is a foundation for good vision.

The Importance of Regular Eye Exams
Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining good vision throughout your life. They confirm you have the correct prescription and play a vital role in detecting and managing eye diseases that become more prevalent with age. These diseases include:
- Glaucoma: A leading cause of blindness, glaucoma damages the optic nerve. Early detection and treatment are essential.
- Age-related macular Degeneration (AMD): A condition that affects central vision and can lead to vision loss if left untreated.
- Diabetic Retinopathy: Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina, potentially leading to vision loss. Regular eye exams help monitor for these changes.
Providing Valuable Eye Care
We understand that cost is a factor when you’re planning your eye care. We offer a general breakdown of our eye exam costs, but if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact our team.
Exam Fees by Age:
- 18 & Under: $45*
- 19 to 64 (Not including Optomap Retinal Photos): $149
- 65 & Older: $65**
*Optomap Retinal Photos are recommended at eye exams to help detect asymptomatic eye disease.
**Optomap retinal photos OR dilated eye exams are required for patients 65 and older. Optomap retinal images provide a permanent record of the retina for future comparison; most private vision insurance plans cover the $45 fee. Dilated eye exam fees are covered under Manitoba Health. Still, they will require a driver as vision will be blurry for a few hours after the exam.
Early Detection & Dedicated Care
Our team will assess your vision during your exam with various tests, from simple eye charts to specialized equipment. A comprehensive evaluation helps us understand your specific visual needs.
Our team will also discuss your findings with you clearly and understandably. We believe informed patients are empowered patients. From there, we recommend the best course of action, whether an updated prescription, eye drops, or more.
