Healthy Eyes, Bright Futures
Our team believes a strong foundation in vision is vital for a child’s success. That’s why we offer dedicated children’s eye exams designed to keep your little one’s vision on track for a lifetime of learning and achievement.
Our children’s eye exams go beyond just checking for 20/20 vision. Good vision is more than just seeing clearly. It plays a crucial role in a child’s development, from fundamental skills like reading and writing to critical areas like hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
Early diagnosis of conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness) and amblyopia (lazy eye) can allow for earlier treatment, leading to improved outcomes in adulthood.
If your child needs myopia management, vision therapy, or amblyopia treatment, an eye exam is the first step. Schedule an eye exam for your kids today.

Following the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) guidelines, we recommend these eye exam milestones:
- 6–9 Months Old: An initial exam to assess general eye development.
- 2–18 Years Old: Comprehensive eye exams every 12 months until the age of 19
- Myopia (Nearsightedness): Children with myopia may require exams every 3–6 months to help monitor & manage myopia progression.
What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam
We understand that eye exams can sometimes feel intimidating for children. At Waverley Eye Centre, we aim to create a welcoming and playful environment.
From colourful decorations and engaging games to friendly conversation and positive reinforcement, we strive to make your child feel comfortable and confident throughout the process.
Our experienced staff is passionate about working with children and uses age-appropriate techniques and tools to make the exam enjoyable and stress-free.
Glasses Prescrption Testing & Myopia Management
Identifying vision problems early means we can offer support (like prescription glasses) to help your child see the world more clearly. We’ll assess for common refractive errors, including astigmatism, farsightedness (hyperopia), and nearsightedness (myopia).
Starting myopia management early can help slow the rapid progression of nearsightedness, protecting your child’s long-term vision and eye health.
Eye Alignment Testing
We check how well their eyes work together for depth perception, possibly using playful games or specialized equipment like cover tests. We also examine your child’s eye health for signs of conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes).
Overall Eye Health Assessments
We evaluate they overall health of your eyes, examining eye structures using a range of tools and techniques. We use optos retinal imaging technology that allows us take take detailed photos inside the eye without needing to use eyes drops to dilate your child’s eyes.
We also offer vision therapy services for children.
Clear Communication & Discussion
We’ll explain our findings in clear and understandable language, answer your questions openly, and discuss any necessary next steps. We believe in open communication and want to empower you to make informed decisions about your child’s eye health.

Why are Children’s Eye Exams Important?
Unlike adults who can easily communicate any vision difficulties they experience, young children may not realize there is a problem.
Uncorrected vision problems can lead to:
- Learning Difficulties: Blurry vision or focusing issues can make reading, writing, and concentrating on the whiteboard a struggle.
- Delayed Development: Good vision is crucial for hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and overall development.
- Behavioural Issues: Vision frustration can manifest as behavioural problems like difficulty concentrating, acting out, or withdrawal.
Myopia Management for Your Kids
At Waverley Eye Centre, myopia (nearsightedness) is a growing concern. While glasses or contacts correct vision, myopia management can help slow its progression in children.
A proactive approach to myopia management can help:
- Maintain Clearer Vision: Over time, kids with myopia often need stronger and stronger lenses as their vision gets worse. By slowing myopia, your child may be able to maintain clearer vision for longer and avoid the frequent need for new glasses.
- Reduce Future Eye Risks: Studies suggest slowing myopia may decrease the risk of problems like retinal detachment and glaucoma later in life.
- Enhance Quality of Life: A more precise vision can boost confidence and activity participation.
Investing in Your Child’s Visual Health
Children’s eye care is about being proactive and discovering potential issues early. A regular eye exam schedule can help our team avoid problems and preserve your child’s visual health.
During routine eye exams, we can diagnose and treat conditions like eye infections, eye misalignment, or nearsightedness, which can often be managed effectively to help your child see comfortably.
