Addressing Myopia Early
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition in which distant objects appear blurry while close objects are seen clearly. Our team at Waverley Eye Centre wants to help your children enjoy clear, healthy vision.
In the past, eye doctors could update glasses and contacts to help kids see clearer, but we had no way to prevent myopia from getting worse over time.
But here’s some good news: today, we have options that can slow myopia progresssion by 50%.
We offer different myopia control methods to help proactively manage myopia progression, including:
- Myopia control glasses (Stellest, Miyosmart, MyoCare)
- Myopia management soft contact lenses (MiSight, Abiliti)
- Ortho-k (overnight contact lenses)
- Low dose atropine eye drops
Don’t let your kids’ myopia go unchecked—contact us to schedule an appointment today.
Request AppointmentWhat Is Myopia Control?
Myopia control is a proactive approach that slows down myopia progression in children. Slowing myopia can:
- Reduce future eye problem risks like glaucoma and macular degeneration.
- Prevent high myopia by slowing eyeball growth.
- Maintain a clear vision for participation in activities and learning for longer.
Our team offers control methods like MiSight, ortho-k, and more.
Common Causes of Myopia
The exact cause of myopia is not fully understood. Still, genetic and environmental factors are believed to play a role. Some potential contributing factors include:
- Genetics
- Increased screen time
- Reduced outdoor time
- Diabetes
- Age
- Excessive close work (reading, studying, etc.)
How Does Myopia Impact Eye Health?
While mild myopia often poses no significant challenges, high myopia (severe nearsightedness) can increase the risk of developing other eye conditions later in life because it causes eye tissue to stretch and thin.
High myopia can lead to:
- Glaucoma: Increased eye pressure is a significant risk factor for glaucoma, and high myopia is associated with a higher risk of developing glaucoma.
- Retinal detachment: A high myopic eye is longer than a normal eye, and this increased axial length can make the retina thinner and more prone to tears.
- Myopic maculopathy: High myopia may be a risk factor for certain types of macular degeneration.

The Importance of Axial Length Measurement
Axial length refers to the front-to-back measurement of the eyeball. In myopic eyes, the axial length is longer than normal. Regularly measuring your child’s axial length is a crucial part of myopia management. It allows us to:
- Track progression: By monitoring changes in axial length over time, we can assess how quickly your child’s myopia is progressing.
- Evaluate treatment effectiveness: Axial length measurements can help us determine the effectiveness of myopia management techniques in slowing down the elongation of the eyeball.
Our Approach to Halting Myopia Progression
Early intervention and proactive management are key in preventing the potential complications associated with high myopia.
At Waverley Eye Centre, we believe in a proactive approach to myopia management. We work collaboratively with parents to develop a personalized management plan based on your child’s individual needs and the severity of their myopia.
MiSight Lenses
MiSight 1 day lenses are soft contact lenses that can help manage myopia for children. These lenses use ActivControl technology to help correct and slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8–12.
MiSight lenses are daily-wear lenses, so they’re low-risk for children, and children as young as 8 years old have shown confidence in handling these lenses. If your children aren’t fans of wearing glasses, then MiSight may be a solution.
Ortho-k Lenses
Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses are customized rigid gas-permeable lenses. These specialized contacts are worn during sleep at night and taken out in the morning and aim to give clear, comfortable vision during the day without glasses or contacts.
Ortho-k lenses can be a good fit for children, teens, and adults who want freedom from eyewear but may not be able to have refractive surgery.
Spectacle Lenses
While traditional glasses correct vision, some specialized spectacle lens designs like Hoya MiYOMART offer additional benefits for myopia management. These lenses may incorporate features like peripheral defocus technology, which aims to reduce the focusing stress on the developing eye.
We can discuss the most suitable lens options for your child based on their specific needs and preferences.
Atropine
Low-dose atropine eye drops may be prescribed for some children. Atropine works by temporarily relaxing the focusing muscles in the eye, potentially reducing the focusing stress on the eye and slowing down its axial elongation. We will carefully assess your child’s suitability for this treatment option.
