MiSight Contacts for Myopia Management and Control

Hey Good optometry morning. Dr. Michael Nelson,  Winnipeg Optometrist near you and today I am going to tell you what is so special about Misight daily disposable contact lenses.

Misight are a unique daily disposable soft contact lens manufactured by Coopervision and available at Waverley Eye Care Centre.  It is a truly unique product because it the only soft contact lens that is approved by the FDA to do 2 things:  1.  Allow you to see clearly, which isn’t anything exciting…that’s what you expect from a contact lens  and 2. Slow the progression of your myopia.

Who is this for:

This lens is designed to slow the progression of myopia and since most of the progression of myopia occurs in between 8-12 years old that means this lens is designed exclusively to be worn by kids.

One common question I get from Winnipeg parents is if it is okay for kids to wear contact lenses and the answer is yes.

The there are 2 things that make this perfect for kids:

One is it’s a Daily disposable lens.  The biggest enemy of contact lenses are lipids and proteins that stick on the lens that you can’t clean off with even the most rigorous cleaning.  And these are more prevalent in teens.  With a daily disposable lens we throw out the lens with every wear so no chance of building up deposits.

This material used for this lens is omafilcon….it’s the same material used for Coopervision’s Proclear family of lenses and it is a tried and true biocompatible material that binds water molucules to the surface making it very comfortable, resistant to drying and resistant to deposits.  Perfect for kids.

And whats more, In the research study for Misight contact lenes, kids between the ages 8 and 12 wore these lens successfully all day, 6 days per week for 3 years.  So that means it was safe for kids.

So eventhough the study shows it to be safe Coopervision wants to make sure you are successful so they have launched the Brilliant Futures myopia management program which is designed to help education parents and kids on myopia management and the successful and healthy wear of contact lenses.

How does it work?   So the MiSight contact lens is one tool in Winnipeg optometrists myopia management toolbox and if you want to learn about more options you will want to watch the entire myopia management playlist right here.

So misght contacts work on the principle of peripheral retinal defocus.

One theory in the progression of myopia has to do with how lenses focus images in the peripheral retinal.  Traditional lenses focus images in the center of the retina but not in the peripheral parts of the retina.  This defocus in the peripheral retina is thought to cause a stimulus for the eye to continue growing and increase myopia.

Peripheral Defocus contact lenses focus the image on the peripheral retina to try to reduce the progression of myopia

Does it actually work?  The short answer is yes.  In a 3 year study it showed that missight contact lenses slowed the progression by almost 60% and they slowed the growth of the eye by..

So this lens works to slow progression.

So what should you do:

And if your child has not had an eye exam in the past year….you should get them checked to watch for the earliest signs of myopia…because we now have a way to slow it down.

The optometrists at Waverley Eye Care in Winnipeg are happy to fit you in MiSight or other contact lenses.
